1. ACCESS AFRICA: SAFARIS FOR PEOPLE WITH LIMIITED MOBILITY

Gordon Rattray, disabled advocate and operator of Able Travel Accessible Adventures, recently completed Access Africa: Safaris for People with Limited Mobility. His book will be available from Bradt Travel Guides in mid-August.

Rattray wrote the book specifically for travellers with limited mobility. It covers the six major safari countries, describing access (with measurements) in nearly 300 safari properties from Kenya to Cape Town. Also included are details of:

Specialist tour operators

Flight and airport procedure

Travel insurance and health concerns

Itinerary planning

Equipment hire

Wildlife, history and other general background information

Take a taste of Rattray’s book, view images of accommodations and order a copy at www.access-africa.co.uk

2. NAVIGATING BARCELONA & GENEVA EASIER

Imagine if disabled people took to the streets, photographed road obstacles that hindered their paths and then uploaded the photos to the Net to assist other disabled travelers. Antoni Abad, of Spain, did exactly that by creating a web site to help disabled people navigate Geneva and Barcelona easier. Visit www.zexe.net  and click on the wheelchair symbols for those cities to view a city map display featuring clickable icons for entrances, curbs, stairs, transportation and more. Rudimentary French and Spanish is all one needs to appreciate this site, but if you have translation problems, use Babel Fish at http://babelfish.yahoo.com/

This on-going project is part of megafone.net where people use mobile phones to create audio recordings and images to upload to the web.
