1. POWER WHEELS ON SAN DIEGO BEACH

Driving a wheelchair through sand used to be about as easy as maneuvering an elephant onto a trampoline. But thanks to the Beach Cruzr power chair, disabled beachgoers can race the beach like walkabouts, feel the salt spray on their faces and easily get as sunburned as anyone else.

As of August 1, San Diego, California is the first US city to provide these motorized vehicles for free at the Mission Beach lifeguard station. There will be no more bogging down in the sand thanks to this accessible dune buggy invented by former drag boat racer, Hank Weseman. The Beach Cruzr sports a stainless steel frame and joystick. Its two 24-volt motors allow disabled beachgoers enough independence to spin through the sand with ease.

2. KARRAGARRA ISLAND, AUSTRALIA

Karragarra, a new accessible holiday complex especially designed for people with disabilities, is now available for visitors on Australia’s sub-tropical Moreton Bay Island, located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Karragarra is a 12-minute waterbus ride from Redland Bay. Fishing and visiting the rainforest, the winery and the aboriginal cultural center are some of the popular pastimes near Karragarra. To learn more, contact Sue Barnier at karracom@redland.net.au

3. ACCESSIBLE HOT AIR BALLOON RIDES

Hot air balloon rides are rarely known for their wheelchair access. Maneuvering over the basket to board, stops most of us at the start. Fortunately, Reach for the Stars Hot Air Balloon Foundation, based in San Diego, California, created a custom basket for wheelchairs, which was designed, built and approved according to Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. The basket is large enough to accommodate one person in a wheelchair and two other passengers. The pioneering efforts of this nonprofit company give access to the skies a whole new meaning. Fully equipped with accessible ramps, restrooms, and doorways, the 3-bedroom 2- bath home sleeps eight and comes equipped with a 20’ x 40’ swimming pool. Canoeing, kayaking and bird watching are popular pastimes in the area. To check availability, contact Diana Altman at (910) 277-7952.

7. THE TRAVEL SPIRIT

Recently, we received a traveler’s account that demonstrates a travel spirit that can sometimes reap unexpected rewards. Mavis Hobbs, of Melbourne, Australia, didn’t necessarily spend a lot of time planning a perfectly accessible trip. Instead of getting bogged down in the details often necessary to guarantee access, she and her friend Kylee simply got on a plane and started an adventure of a lifetime. By jumping out there without hesitation, Mavis made memories that will endure far longer than her short adventure in Rotorua. Her mantra of “Do it now and have no regrets later” is a powerful affirmation for all disabled travelers. http://www.globalaccessnews.com/spiritoftravel.htm
